The Internal Affairs section of the New
Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has been established to allow citizens a
formal way of making a complaint on a deputy or to commend a deputy for
doing a good job. The Internal Affairs function and disciplinary system
of the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office serves as a critical link, if
not conduit, for community trust.
Internal Affairs is responsible for
investigating complaints filed against members of the New Hanover County
Sheriff’s Office in a professional and through manner, to review Policy
and Procedures of the Sheriff’s Office and to recognize training needs
within the Sheriff’s Office.
The goal of Internal Affairs is to assure
the citizens of New Hanover County that all complaints are given due
attention and are fully investigated and to foster the trust the
citizens have with the Sheriff’s Office. Once a complaint has been
investigated the results and findings are forwarded to Sheriff Causey
for his review and action.
North Carolina Law prohibits the release
of the results of an Internal Affairs investigation to the complaining
citizen, however you will receive a letter from the Sheriff informing
you of the status of your complaint.
